Aromatherapy

There are a few different ways to use essential oils to gain great benefits, they can be inhaled directly from the bottle, you can place a few drops of essential oil on a cloth an place it on a humidifier where the mist is released, or you can use a diffuser.
When applying the oils topically the key areas are crown of head, temples, behind ears, back of neck, shoulders, abdomen, tops and soles of feet, and ankles. Many essential oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to the body such as coconut, jojoba, sweet almond, grape seed or olive oil. It is important to read the label of each essential oil before application. When applying place your choice of carrier oil in one hand and then follow with 2-4 drops of an essential oil and rub hands together them massage into the desired area in a circular motion. If using more than one essential oil apply one at a time, reapply when necessary. If you find there to be a skin sensitivity reaction Do Not wash with water (water will drive oils deeper into skin) instead use a carrier oil, wipe the skin with the carrier oil.

Child Friendly

When applying essential oils on a child, the best way to start is with the soles of their feet Place one or two drops in your hand blended with a carrier oil (this will dilute the essential oil so the child can adjust slowly to the new scents), rub hands together and then rub onto the soles of the child's feet. When using more than one essential oil on your child layer the oils, never blend oils together. Make sure to keep any 'hot' oils (such as peppermint) away from their face.

A few essential oils for children:

Lavender:
-massage into the back of the neck or the bottom of the feet for a calming effect
-rub a drop on your palm and smooth over pillow to aid with sleep
Frankincense:
-at the first sign of a cold, rub a few drops on the soles of your feet
-rub on the feet or the back of the neck to soothe overactive children
German Chamomile:
-massage behind the ear to help reduce fever

-massage several drops of Peppermint oil on the abdomen to relieve nausea
-use a drop of peppermint oil in a carrier oil and apply to each side of the nose, above the brow and on chest and back to help clear congestion

-massage several drops on abdomen in a clockwise motion to help move bowels
Eucalyptus:
-diffuse 8-10 drops in bedroom

Hi Coley925,

I like this hub because it is useful. I have always enjoyed aromatherapy but rarely by the essential oils. Out of sight, out of mind I guess. The only thing that I am in the habit of keeping as a staple in the house is incense.

Thanks, if you decide to venture into essential oils be sure they are high quality oils. Two companies I know provide us with high quality oils are Aura Cacia and Young Living.
